National Numeracy, an independent charity based in Lewes, UK, is dedicated to empowering adults across the UK to improve their numeracy skills—a vital aspect of “everyday maths.” Recognizing the importance of lifelong learning, National Numeracy came to us with a bold challenge: increase engagement in numeracy education for all UK adults, helping to build confidence and skill with numbers in day-to-day life.
The Challenge
National Numeracy aimed to significantly boost engagement in its numeracy initiatives, reaching audiences from professionals and parents to self-directed learners. Our mission was to create an accessible and engaging digital platform that would attract a wide variety of users and support multiple needs, from individual learners to organizational partners. This needed to be a scalable, user-centered solution capable of handling large volumes of traffic during high-profile campaigns, such as National Numeracy Day.
Our Approach
We adopted a data-driven and user-centered approach to meet this challenge, grounded in National Numeracy’s own insights and feedback gathered through interviews, surveys, and analytics. Together with National Numeracy, we developed a dual-stream digital programme focused on flexibility and responsiveness:
1.Primary Platform
We built a Drupal-based main website that segmented content effectively to meet the needs of different user groups, including self-access learners, educators, parents/carers, and employers. This site features clean, differentiated content paths, making it easy for each user group to find relevant resources.
2.Campaign Platform
In parallel, we launched a focused campaign site using Drupal and Acquia Cohesion to support targeted messaging and engagement for National Numeracy Day. This platform handled pay-per-click (PPC) and email customer relationship management (ECRM) landing pages, guiding users through pre-event, active campaign, and post-campaign experiences to maximize engagement and retention.
