How we created a brand new design system for Unit4 and launched 5 websites in 10 weeks.

Unit4, a leader in cloud-based ERP solutions, needed a rapid digital expansion to keep pace with their ambitious growth and global presence. With a new group website freshly launched, Unit4 sought a way to scale their brand consistently across multiple regional websites, empowering local teams with tools to manage content efficiently—all while ensuring a consistent brand experience globally.

The Challenge

Unit4’s rapid expansion presented unique technical and logistical challenges. With sites across 26 countries, each with its own audience focus, the project needed to accommodate multiple languages, regional content, and custom integrations. The challenge was to create a scalable, low-code design system that allowed regional teams to manage their sites while maintaining a unified brand experience. Efficiency was crucial to meet the 10-week deadline, avoiding technical debt and unnecessary code forks while keeping all sites synchronized with the primary design system.

Our Approach

To meet Unit4’s ambitious timeline and global goals, we developed a centralized, reusable design system that allowed Unit4’s teams to quickly build and launch sites. Here’s how we tackled it:

1.Global Requirement Gathering

We worked with Unit4’s global and partner teams to document every requirement, sketching out components, content types, and technical implementations to address diverse regional needs and brand consistency.

2.Centralised, Flexible Design System

We structured the design system to allow users to assemble pages using drag-and-drop components, aligning content types across all regions. The system was centralized in a single code repository to eliminate code forks, managed with deployment profiles to tailor specific functionality to each site.

3.Training and Support

To ensure each regional marketing team could effectively use the system, we conducted training sessions covering the design specification and CMS capabilities. This approach empowered Unit4’s teams to independently manage content and add custom elements, such as chat integrations and Marketo forms, without deviating from brand guidelines.

4.Pilot Site Testing and Rollout

We conducted a pilot build to refine the system, incorporating feedback to create a robust, scalable framework. Once validated, we expanded the system across the first five sites, ultimately supporting the group, Careers, and Community sites.
